You Got What It Takes“Make money while you sleep! Put it on autopilot! Get rich quick!” Blah, blah, blah. These scam headlines are plastered all over the internet. Have you been-there-done-that?

Have you ever stopped and just asked, “How do I create a website that people will read?” That’s the secret to online success: learn it…own it…do it! It’s that simple and it’s that hard. Things worth doing are worth doing right and you shouldn’t treat your website like some prize in a Cracker Jack box; cheap and of little value.

Why not let the experts help you get started?

What’s Your Website About?

Before you can actually start a website you must choose what it will be about. Sounds simple enough, right? But think about it for a few minutes (maybe even jot down some ideas). Your niche should be:

  • Something you either know or are passionate about…or are willing to learn.
  • Not too broad; for instance: “explore Europe” is better than “explore the world”. And “explore Europe by train” is even better.
  • How many posts can you write? Websites need to be dynamic, always updated, and providing the information people are looking for. You must be able to continually add to your site (search engines love this).
  • It must be fun…as soon as it’s not…you’re distracted by butterflies and Facebook
  • Finally, have a goal for your website so you and your visitors know why you created it in the first place.

The experts say: get a niche first.

Choose A Platform

And I’m not referring to a train platform in Europe. Choose your website platform. WordPress is, by far, the most popular platform being used today. Did you know that according to Wikipedia, WordPress is used by more than 60 million websites? It’s become more than a blog but a website platform in its own right.

Take a look at some of the features that are must haves:

  • Thousands of themes. These let you give your site the look you want. Quick TIP: popular websites nowadays use simple themes, usually black on white with simple images. Need proof: check out the Apple site.
  • Take the technical out of learning: in times past everyone had to know coding in order to build a website. But no longer! The work is done for you; all you need to do is get writing content that people are looking for.
  • The right plugins can help you personalize your website. Caution: only use those plugins that you must have and that do not create an unnecessary load on your website (speed of loading is one of the algorithms search engines consider.)

Frame Your House

You don’t have to be a building contractor to know that a house starts with a foundation (website platform) and then a framework. You need to create what your website will look like.

For instance:

  • What will your pages be? These will be the menu you include at the top of your site. What do you want people to see and click on? You need to make navigating your site easy and with your visitor’s needs in mind.
  • What will you include on the top, side, and bottom of your site? Again, this needs to be designed with your visitors needs at the forefront. Help them.
  • Are you monetizing your website? Don’t fill every available space with an ad…they can go to Amazon or eBay for that. If you want to make money then provide your visitors with product or business reviews. A personal experience is best; they’re looking for someone who has had success or recommends something.

The experts say: build it for your visitor and they will come.

Write, Write…and then Write Some More!

Websites are never done. They are always growing, evolving, answering questions and providing help. Search engines like fresh…visitors like relevancy and will come back for more if you deliver.
