SEO ButtonSearch Engine Optimization (SEO) training for anyone who is a beginner blogger is absolutely critical for your success if you want your website to be found!

And guess what: it’s a lot easier than you think.

SEO might sound like a foreign beast to the uninitiated but it is actually easy to tame and can become your best friend when understood and used properly.  Read this first if you are still needing to create a website.

Here are some tips that you need to know.

An Easy Definition

Search Engine Optimization (SEO from here on for simplicity) is essentially ensuring that your website (blog) are found by the search engines…meaning, that you’re optimized.

Wikipedia defines SEO (paraphrased) as the process of making your website visible to the search engines and, ultimately, to your potential readers.  But you don’t need to worry about the technicalities, unless that’s what you like to do, but, rather, follow the steps below and your site will become optimized and found.

Your goal, especially if you intend to make money from your website, is to rank in the top 3 search engines, ideally on page one.  Google, Bing, and Yahoo all use algorithms with the searcher in mind and you need to keep that in mind when it comes to SEO.

If you’re unclear why first page rankings are important then let me spell it out:

Quality content + traffic + 1st page rankings = money!

Relevant to the User

Search engines like Google care more about the searcher than they do about the website.  They want to deliver the best search experience possible by returning the top relevant websites according to what has been entered in the search box.

This means that your job with your website is to ensure that you are relevant by using the keywords that people are searching for.  This may seem like you’re searching for the Holy Grail but with the right keyword tool your job will be made that much easier.

Your goal is to be ranking on page one of the search engines and, ideally, within the top 5 search results.  After that, people tend to move on.  Think of your own searches, how often have you gone further than the first 5 websites, let alone clicked beyond page one?

Ranking on page one is doable…keep reading.

High Traffic & Low Competition

Of course the more traffic there is the better, right?  While this is true it won’t get you on page one if you’re going up against websites that have branding power, money, or have been around for a number of years.  You just won’t knock them out of the number one spot!

But if you target keywords with low competition then you have increased your chances of landing in that coveted number one spot.  As an example, the keyword for this post “free seo training for beginner bloggers” does not have a lot of traffic but it does have zero competition.  I will be watching with curiosity how it ranks over the next while.

An interesting note is that longer keywords (sometimes referred to as “long-tail keywords”) will often have less traffic but also have less competition and this should not be ignored.  Internet surfers have become much savvier and will type in exactly what it is they are looking for.  You just need to ensure that your keyword, long or short, is natural sounding and makes sense for someone to search for.

Again, as an example, look at the title for this post and ask yourself, “If I was a beginner blogger and I needed to understand this thing called SEO, what would I type into the search box?”  Hopefully it would be the title used here or some slight variation of it.

I know that using the “high traffic/low competition” formula will work for you because it does for me.

It’s All about Content – Content – and, yes, More Content

Forget about glitz and glamour and fancy show rooms.  Visitors to your website have one thing in mind: “Can you help me with my problem?  No?  Goodbye.”  They are truly just a click away, usually in about 5 seconds, from moving on to the next site that has the information they are looking for.

As one of my online coaches, Carson, states, “Build content rich, keyword targeted websites, and watch your pages get great rankings.”  There truly is nothing simpler than this.

Your goal as an internet marketer is to be writing what people want to read; specifically, keep your reader in mind at all times.  Just like you, these are real people with real problems and you must provide real solutions.

Remember this: your reader comes before the search engines.

Or another way to remember this, if you are monetizing your site, who will buy from you, a person or a search engine?  I did not see a search engine at the bank the last time I was there.

Free Traffic…the Best Kind

No charges for traffic = all profit to the site owner.  Using the traffic/competition formula noted above will mean that you will see traffic to your website.  Remember, this is also referred to as organic traffic, meaning you’re not paying for it, so it may take a while to grow your website.

As your website grows you can begin to monetize it!  Just don’t put the cart (money) before the horse (content).

Again, ask yourself, how often have you landed on a website and couldn’t see the content (the information you were looking for) through the barrage of advertisements?  This often means that the author is more intent on selling you something that you didn’t come looking for than they are on providing an answer to your problem.

Understanding SEO is not that difficult if you follow the tips above.  Don’t let the name throw you, like it did me, or stop you from understanding what works best for your website.  It’s not that difficult and it is well worth your time to learn and follow.

These techniques are helping many posts on this site rank on page one…this stuff really works!
